~~Buddy tells the story of the rise to fame of Buddy Holly and The Crickets up to his death in 1959.
Dan Anketell led this enthusiastic company from the start, even down to playing his guitar live on stage. As did Ed Hill and Mike Holt, who were joined by Pat Jervis as The Crickets. They were well supported by Pete Beck as ‘The Big Bopper’ and Anil Patel as Ritchie Valens together with Helen Simon as Buddy’s wife Maria Elena. I also must commend Fidel Lloyd, Joanne McWillie and Michael Steer as The Apollo Performers. Their rendition of ‘Shout’ was a joy to listen to. Tony Orbell acted his role well as the MC of the Clear Lake Concert.
The first half of the show told of Buddy’s rise to fame but it was the second half which had the audience dancing in the aisles. The last scene depicted Buddy’s last concert before the flight which led to his untimely death. I don’t know where the chorus got the energy from as they just danced from start to finish. All praise to Maggie Jackson as choreographer. It was also a nice change to see Musical Director Sheila Pearson and the band playing on stage. I was informed that this show was a sell out and you can understand why. Director Lynne Hill, who has a safe pair of hands, should be very proud of the production and so should SCMTC.
The costumes looked good and really stood out, especially in the full company numbers. The set, though minimal, was most effective and conveyed just what was required. The most effective scene for me was the final one which was that of a lone guitar in a spotlight on the corner of the stage while the radio announcer informed the audience of the death of Buddy and his two friends. Really effective.
