Brownhills MTC presented a production come concert which was a celebration of music from Broadway from as far back as 1927 right up to present day.
There was a terrific range spanning classic musicals such as Top Hat, Guys and Dolls, Mack and Mabel, 42nd Street and in the second half moving on to more modern musicals such as Beauty and the Beast, Shrek, The Book of Mormon and many, many more. There was basically something for everyone. The emphasis wasn’t only on quality but quantity with over 20 songs in each Act with quality performances throughout and It would be difficult to review all the songs here as I would have to mention the whole cast!
The highlight of the evening for me was the West Side Story section where Karen Cockitt and Matt Pettifer were in fine form with a beautiful rendition of “Tonight” followed by “A Boy Like That” sung by Helen Norgrove and Karen Cockitt. The last song in this section was “America” sung by Sian Cameron-Prowse, Louise Hewitt and Ensemble which really captured the atmosphere of this very powerful and dramatic musical.
Chris Corcoran provided the splendid orchestra which showcased many difficult arrangements that the company coped with superbly and with a nice sound balance that for once didn’t overpower the vocals.
Thanks also to the rest of the production team of Pete Smith, Sonia Cameron and Michelle Baker for providing us with a memorable night’s entertainment.
