This was my second visit to Paisley Arts Centre in just under three weeks and the senior company’s revue was one with a difference. The brief to the Director Andrew Agnew (alias P.C. Plumb of TV fame) was to devise and present a revue comprising not the usual “big hits” from the top musicals but real gems from shows that have not been performed too often as well as lesser known numbers from some of the top shows. Needless to say, Andrew jumped at the chance and the revue he and the group presented was an absolute treat and novelty for the capacity audiences.
The compact stage of the Arts Centre accommodated the cast of up to two dozen principal singers – not often at once but as required for solos, duets, quartets, concerted numbers and the like – all proceeding seamlessly from number to number with the cast taking on or off-stage, the minimal props required. Music was provided by a small trio positioned at the rear of the stage led by Ian Monteith-Mathie on electronic piano – just the right balance for the presentation. Andrew had chosen numbers from shows such as 70 Girls 70, Copacabana, A Chorus Line, The Magic Show, Young Frankenstein, All Shook Up, The Addams Family, Follies, Sweet Charity, And the World Goes Round, Shrek and many others. With the choice of music being somewhat out of the ordinary, the singers had a lot of new learning and much rehearsal to do and high praise is due to all for a truly memorable revue.
