Tonight Lochgelly & District Amateur Musical Association combined talents with those of prizewinning Lochgelly Brass Band to offer an evening of variety, from musicals new and not so. To mention just a few of my personal favourites - the evening opened with a LADAMA/Brass Band combination of “Another Openin’ Another Show”, the spirit of which set the tone for the evening. This was quickly followed by another well-known number “Hello Dolly”. Several of the numbers in Act One were band-only – but no less enjoyable, for example “Ol’ Man River” and an “Abba Medley”.
The second act opened with a stirring performance of the overture from Phantom of the Opera by the band. Adam Campbell then gave us a moving performance of “Bui Doi” from Miss Saigon, while Rachel Munro surpassed her – by now well-known vocal talents - with a performance of “Defying Gravity” from Wicked, which exuded feeling both in acting and singing – I would love to have heard this encored!
“Don’t Rain on My Parade” sung by Shona DeRose was another of these numbers when given the right treatment can become a showstopper – and Shona did just that!
A number that has become ever popular in musical variety programmes “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray featured Emily Dryburgh as Tracy, and aided and abetted by some of her choral colleagues, brought the show nearly to a close, with the exception of a fine rendition of “Do You Hear The People Sing” performed with gusto by all the LADAMA soloists and chorus accompanied by Lochgelly Brass Band.
A well deserved encore was asked for by the audience – and duly given - in the form of an excerpt from Carousel.
Many thanks for the invite to your 2017 Concert.
