It is wonderful and heart-warming to see a group of children on stage, enjoying themselves!. We were lucky enough to witness this at Blyth Music and Theatre Company’s Youth Academy Concert; ‘Broadway Bound’ performed at St Cuthbert’s Church Hall this week.
A cast of 25 aged between 8 and 16 had a packed hall riveted to their excellent production from start to finish. Their enjoyment was infectious and every single item in their repertoire was greeted by all with woops and cheers.
They chose both choral and solo items from Oliver, Grease, Annie, Les Miserables, Mamma Mia, Hairspray, Wicked, School of Rock, and, as an introduction to their parent group’s main production next year, I’m A Believer from Shrek the Musical. All of which were narrated and delivered with excellent backing tracks to the highest standard.
In pre-show conversations with Shaunagh Burge and Zowie Hutchinson; two very proud directors, they told me the members of the group had been instrumental in the choice of content, the choreography and presentation of the numbers too. All in all, a great ‘team effort’ of which they should all be extremely proud.
We saw new members as well as ‘old hands’ on stage, all performing as though it was in their DNA, and as far as this reviewer is concerned, they could all be going in the direction of the concert title – straight to Broadway.
It is comforting to both us, the audience, as well as their parent society to know that, in Blyth at least, the future of amateur theatre is in extremely safe hands, as any youngster witnessing this show must surely want to be a future part of it!.
There were many quality highlights too many to mention and some stellar performances, also in abundance, and it would be wrong of me to single any one out. But I would sincerely congratulate Shaunagh and Zowie and their team for the obvious hard work and joy brought about by their hugely successful efforts.
Concerts are extremely important for children and youth groups, as it instils a different kind of personal experience not usually associated with the one of ‘hiding’ behind a charcter in a written scripted show. It seemed easy for this cast; another plus point, surely.
Many congratulations to all concerned in this wonderful show. I look forward to others like it. Also many thanks from me and Councillor Peter for the invitation and warm hospitality. We had a great time.
