Aberdeen Opera Company are certainly showing us how musically versatile they have become – in the past year they have given us evenings of opera highlights, Rodgers and Hammerstein favourites and now Brit Pop! This latest offering covered Brit Pop classics from the Sixties (Beatles) right up to the present (Adele). It also managed to give a nod to two local quines – Annie Lennox and Emeli Sande. With a show like this full of brilliant songs excellently performed it is difficult to pick out individual items or soloists for particular mention. The evening commenced with a medley of Bond Movie themes (including Goldfinger and Live and Let Die) which was full of wonderful harmonies and then went on to include arrangements of numbers such as Handbags and Gladrags, Viva Forever (a tribute to the Spice Girls), Angels (Robbie Williams), a Queen Medley (including Bohemian Rhapsody) and finishing with a Beatles medley which had most of the audience singing along. However the highlight for me came right at the end of the first half with Samantha Gray’s magnificent performance of Adele’s “Rollin’ in the Deep”. “We are the Champions” was one of the numbers included in the Queen Medley and the cast of 18 singers certainly proved to the extremely appreciative audience that they were indeed the Champions.
