I had the pleasure of attending Top Box Studios 13-19 year group at Greig Hall, Alcester on behalf of my colleague Chris Davies, with a very warm welcome from its members. "Bring It On: The Musical" is a theatrical experience that combines elements of cheerleading, entertainment, and high-energy performances. This musical adaptation of the popular film series brings to life the competitive spirit of cheerleading while exploring themes of friendship, rivalry, and self-discovery.

The packed audience was met with the hall laid out with tables and seating and a simple set consisting of a raised level at the rear, which was supplemented with additional effective scenery for some scenes and atmospheric lighting. The cast first entered through the audience to a rapturous reception.

The main leading girl was Grace L  as Campbell, the newly elected captain of Truman High School. Grace had a fine voice and throughout was both positive and sensitive as the situation dictated both in song and acting – an excellent performance. Her boy-friend at the time was Steven, ably played by  JT M and I did like their number ‘Happy Kitties’. The number ‘Tryouts’ was well led by Skylar played by Caitlin B and this was followed by one of Campbells well sung sensitive numbers ‘One Perfect Moment’. Initially Bridget misses out on the cheer leading squad, being appointed the mascot once again, but later her esteem is boosted and throughout, Elizabeth B gave a convincing performance.

Later Campbell and also Bridget are reassigned to Jackson High School but they have no cheer-leading squad, but a hip-hop crew. It was good to see these students dressed differently. The crew are unkind to Campbell but would like Bridget to join their dancing. Danielle (Erin L) Nautica (Izzy K), La Cienga (Bella A), Twig (Corbyn G-T) and Bridget sang ‘We Ain’t No Cheerleaders’ with spirit. Meanwhile Danielle – the burger girl played well by Erin L, is supported by Campbell and is offered  a one-time chance to dance with the crew, providing she will wear an old leprechaun suit which she does with aplomb and ‘Friday Night Jackson’ was another strong company number.

In act 2 Campbell suggests setting up a squad for cheerleading an in ‘Its All Happening’ the lads are clearly a match for the girls! ‘It Ain’t No Thing’ was another strong number with Izzy K, Bella A and Elizabeth B. Randall came into his own joining Campbell, singing ‘Enjoy the Trip’. Henry S-H as Randall was an endearing character, also a good actor and singer and I enjoyed his scene with Campbell. At times the sound level was challenging but Henry had very clear vocals.

‘Killer Instinct’ was an excellent number sung by Eva (Rory H) as was ‘Eva’s Rant’ later. In the meantime, when Campbell apologies to Danielle, they both sang beautifully together with ‘Were Not Done’. The number ‘Legendry’ gave the opportunity for some of the group to demonstrate their acrobatic skills! Good support was also provided by, Ella J (Kylar), Henry K (Cameron) and Ed K (Announcer).

Overall, the production directed by Tracy Anne Wright and Georgie Pearce and the choreography were uplifting and this oldie regretted he could not have done such a show when he was younger! Congratulations to all involved and my best wishes for the future.
