GYTS choice to perform this relatively new musical set in 1958 and containing an abundance of songs in styles reminiscent of that period, afforded wonderful opportunities for those taking part to showcase the amazing range of talent they undoubtedly possess. The story line is that the girls at Whitney Ellis Private School are only a few days away from the opening night of their end of term musical “Rocket Girl” when the leading lady is knocked unconscious by a sandbag and teenage detective, Brenda Bly, is called upon to solve the crime and save the production This show was a splendid piece of musical theatre with the well-constructed and relevant lyrics being clearly delivered (the song entitled “Stu” being a very good example). The vocal work was performed to an extremely high standard and the dialogue, which contains much humour, clearly delivered. Jake Muffet’s re-orchestration of this musical to include wind instruments greatly extended the range of “textures and timbre” throughout the performance which were exemplified in the musical accompaniment provided by the Band. The innovative and exuberant choreography was exciting and expertly performed with much energy and enthusiasm. Pace is essential to this show and Director Katie Muffet is to be congratulated for co-ordinating the efforts of the cast and crew which ensured the action was maintained. This was great entertainment presented to a very high standard.
