~~This well known classic farce has stood the test of time having been written some 50 years ago. It has had several West End revivals, been made into films and is still extremely popular.
However it doesn’t matter how good the material is it has to be well directed, well acted and fast paced. This production had an abundance of all three.
All the performers were superb in their respective roles with characterisations and accents maintained throughout. Bernard (Dexter Whitehead) went from being an assured lothario to a nervous wreck when his carefully planned life started to fall apart whilst his best friend Robert (Rod Bissit) did the reverse. He started as shy and lacking self confidence to being confident and strong in trying to prevent his friend’s downfall.
Bernard’s three fiancées were extremely well played in contrasting styles by Sarah Carter (Gloria), Katrina Ann Foster (Gabriella) and Phebe Jackson (Gretchen). The timing of their entrances and exits when they all were in town was a delight. The part of the long suffering and grumpy maid Bertha was in the very capable hands of Jennifer Mears.
The programme informed us that due to unforeseen circumstances Sarah and Jennifer were late additions to the cast but it certainly didn’t show.
The set was amazing and it was well complemented by props, costumes, sound and lighting.
Well done to everyone involved!
