BLUE MURDER AT THE BLUE PARROT was a comedy murder mystery set in 1925. Harry Ferrari, owner of the club is found dead. With a jealous wife, a jealous lover, a river club owner seeking to take over the Blue Parrot, there is no shortage of suspects. The audience are invited to guess the murderer, and in one of the two intervals, are able to question the cast. There was also a delicious supper served in the first interval.
The costumes were excellent and in keeping with the period with gorgeous cocktail dresses, lots of black, sequins, sparkles and feathers. There were headdresses and boas as well as long evening gloves. Ruby and Rose Redd-Berring had matching flapper dresses, in red of course! The men were smart in evening and lounge suits.
The set was a good representation of a classy bar/1920s club and gave a solid appearance with décor and layout, with an exit at the back, a well-stocked bar and seating. The props were well sourced in keeping with the period, such as glasses, decanters and cigarette holder. In pride of place, at the front left of the stage was an impressive Parrot’s cage, with parrot (blue)
The sound was good with voices clear and it was lovely to have live piano music occasionally throughout the evening. The stage was well lit until it all went dark for the duration of the murder.
From the moment we entered the hall we were immersed in the atmosphere of the Blue Parrot Club. The FOH ladies were in period costume and there was a high quality menu card for cocktails; all in keeping with the club atmosphere. The action opened with a lively song and dance routine from the Redd-Berring Sisters and there were songs sprinkled through the show in line with the story. The cast were all terrific, keeping to their characters as emotions swung from jealousy and ambition to regret and anger. This was a great example of acting and production excellence.
