This Lionel Bart musical is set around the Blitz during the aerial bombings in London during the second world war was performed by YOG extremely effectively.

Megan Hine as the overprotective mother (Mrs Blitztein) was absolutely fantastic, staying in character and never letting the accent slip. Megan had a great stage presence  playing the feisty nature and the caring mother wonderfully. Harry Laidlaw as the deserter and continually disappointing his Mother (Harry Blitztein) looked at ease in the role and portrayed the part well.  Kaitlin Berridge (Elsie) as the on/off girlfriend of Harry was played well and both were enjoyable performances. Cerys Crowe (Carol Blitztein) had a beautiful softness to her character and a beautiful singing voice. She showed a great sensitivity during the transaction from sighted to blind and together with Callum McArthur (Georgie Locke) who again was very well cast and their duet was touching. Sam Barrowcliffe (Ernie Nearmiss) and Diarmuid Gaffney (Alfred Locke) played the old man characters very well and delivered some very funny lines with excellent timing.  The sparring between Megan and Diarmuid was spot on and easily something relatable.

The formidable principle line up was ably supported by the excellent remaining large cast.  Blitz! has a serious story at its core and this Youth Company showed maturity and portrayed all the parts well.  My 5 year old niece attended the performance with me and really enjoyed  “We’re going to the Country” and “Mums and Dads”  which were performed with gusto and enthusiasm.

.The direction showed great attention to detail and this was evident throughout.  The costumes suited the time period and location. The set was well done and the opening Underground scenes were perfect.

Everyone came together to make this an enjoyable afternoon.
