This was a new show for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed the production, with content that ranged across the musical spectrum. An energetic and enthusiastic company, supported by a superb band, gave a tremendous evening`s entertainment.
Joey Greener was excellent as the almost thirteen year old Josh who had his wish of becoming `big` granted. As Josh`s young friend Billy, Hugo Carter showed maturity well beyond his tender years, a cracking performance - disciplined throughout - he has a very bright future ahead.
As big Josh, Chris Grantham had to convey the character of the immature boy inside the adult, and he gave a sympathetic portrayal, coping well with a demanding role. Great vocally, I particularly liked his rendition of `I Wanna Go Home`. Equal praise is due to Lucy Cadney, as Susan, his unsuspecting love interest. A perfect partner to Chris, she was vocally superb, both in diction and projection. For me the song `Stars` was the highlight.
Toby Bradford gave a sublime portrayal as Macmillan, the toy shop owner, desperate to find a star toy for the Christmas season.Too many to mention, but all in the supporting roles were effective. The chorus gave valuable support, especially the Juniors, who had a lot of scenes in which they danced and sang with great assurance.
A most effective simple set, with good costumes, clever lighting and back projection. Kaleidoscope proved that there are gems of shows waiting to be performed. Well done, this production was well worth it.
