This production had great musicality and compelling dramatic content. The entire cast brought remarkable enthusiasm and drive to the stage, creating a vibrant energy that supported Matthew Coulter’s outstanding and flawless portrayal of Edward Bloom, the charismatic travelling salesman and storyteller at the heart of the show. Rachael Barnes was perfectly cast as Edward’s wife Sandra, whose heartfelt connection with Edward deepened as the story unfolded - particularly in the second act. Their voices blended beautifully especially during the tender duet ‘Daffodills’. Scott Glidden delivered as strong emotionally resonant performance as Edward’s son Will, especially during dramatic confrontations with his father. Christopher Hanlon also impressed as the younger Will, with both he and Scott showcasing excellent vocals, particularly when they came together in ’Fight the Dragons’. The production featured a wide array of interesting and well-developed characters, each brought to life with strong performances from the entire company.  Angela McGarry was warm and grounded as Josaphine, Will’s wife. Joe Totten gave an endearing performance as Karl the Giant. Sarah-Louise Donnelly delivered a great performance as the mysterious and wise Witch. James Brown added charisma and flair as Amos, the Circus owner.  Mairi Aitken brought depth and sincerity to the role of Jenny Hill, Edward’s devoted first love. Jim McGhee portrayed Dr Bennet with great warmth. Kieran Aitken gave a confident performance as Don Price, Sandra’s former fiancé and Owen McNeil added comic charm as his nerdy brother Zachray. Young Haydn Burns was also charming as Will’s son. The production had excellent singing in four part-harmony and made excellent use of the stage, props and choreography to enhance the storytelling. Costumes and movement further elevated the emotional and theatrical impact of the performance. Another success for Shotts.
