This was a very enjoyable evening with the Society in good voice, ably accompanied by Mark Bolland (Keyboards) and Alana Dylak (Drums), all kept in good order and time by MD Clare Halliday.
The programme started with a very well known drumbeat which introduced a medley of songs made famous by 'Queen', which quickly had the audience tapping their feet and singing quietly along to the well loved songs. The first half continued with three songs from the Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire; various popular single numbers and closed with a delightful arrangement of 'Memory' from 'Cats'. One of the highlights of the first half was solo flautist (Andrew Beardsell) who played a well known air from each of the four countries of the United Kingdom.
The second half opened with Scarlet Heights, a local folk group, entertaining us right royally. A selection of James Bond solos followed and I must mention Geraldine Kilduff who was giving a delightful rendition of 'Skyfall' when the mics failed. She just carried on, like a true professional, and received a terrific round of applause at the end. More well loved songs followed then it was the finale where the audience really let their hair down and joined in - what else but a selection of Beatles songs ending with 'Hey Jude'.
One of the many delights of the evening was the diction of the 26 strong choir - I could hear every word, noses were not in the books all the time, eyes were mostly on the MD and everyone looked as if they were thoroughly enjoying themselves, which is very catching and soon passes onto the audience.
The whole concert was very capably introduced and compere by John Mason. Thank you Great Horton for a super evening.
