Does life change us? Michael Frayn’s play deals in depth with the question as to whether the people we meet or marry, the events we have to cope with actually change us as time passes. The programme states ‘You’ll have to keep your wits about you’ and this is certainly true. The author seeks some answers through the relationship of two married couples who initially are friends.

A four hander on a very simple set, the emphasis is solely on the characters and the effect of twenty years on each one of them. David Smith as David the totally committed architect working on ‘slum’ clearance and ‘new build’ housing and Jane Fellows his wife, both give admirable performances. Garry Wilkinson is forceful as the ‘bad guy’ who makes everyone think again about themselves and Heather Boulby is convincing as the seemingly sweet and hopelessly inadequate Sheila.

Well done for putting on this marathon of a play, so much hard work from the cast and the Director.
