I was delighted to be invited to attend The Little Theatre to see the company perform ‘Begin Again, a concert of musical theatre favourites’. Returning to the theatre 18 months after it had last been able to open, was intimidating for its audience, however from the moment we arrived the front of house team made us feel like long lost friends. The simply staged concert of traditional favourites (produced by Stephen Oliver-Davies) was received like a warm hug and its audience were charmed as we were presented with a nostalgic look back over a few of the shows performed by the company over the previous 60 years. The 25 members of the cast were each given a moment in the spotlight as we were taken from Oklahoma, to Nice, to Dakota, to London and on to Siam.
There were a number of performances worthy of mention, Stephen Oliver-Davies with his rendition of 'Hey There' from The Pajama Game, 'If My Friends Could See Me Now' from Sweet Charity sung by Nina Aver, 'The Sound of Music' sung by Cathy Perks and my personal favourite of the night 'Singin’ in the Rain' sung by Ian Clark.
All great concerts rely on the abilities of the technical team and I found the sound (by Lucy Stevens) to be clear and balanced with the five piece band through out the concert, which allowed the arranged harmonies of 'Sunrise Sunset' under the musical director of Garry Bailey to be heard clearly along with all of the soloists.
An evening of enjoyable musical favourites, welcomed by its audience.
