~~We received a very friendly welcome from all of the Front of House team as we were seated in the packed auditorium. The open stage displayed a brilliantly designed set competently constructed by the Company. There were three individual bedrooms on show. The many lighting changes that were necessary for the switches from one bedroom to the next, were well designed and accomplished.
The action takes place in the 70’s over the course of one evening where a young playful, almost sickly sweet newlywed couple, Kate and Malcolm, played by Jacqui Hand and Tony Smith, are preparing for a house warming party. As they wait for their guests to arrive the stories in the other two bedrooms begin to unfold. Nick and Jan, played by Richard Meeson and Sharon Bitner, are supposed to be getting ready to go to the party but Nick has hurt his back and is bed-ridden so Jan decides to go on her own. Meanwhile Ernest and Delia, played by Martyn Kille and Bobbie Tomkins, are preparing to go for an anniversary dinner at their local restaurant.
The catalyst in the story are the only couple who’s bedroom we do not see, Trevor and Susannah, played by James Batchelor and Claire Dunbar are in a volatile marriage that explodes at the party and the fall out involves everybody else in the play.
Under the direction of Teresa Encke, who should be very pleased with the results, all members of the cast gave very good performances, maintaining a good pace throughout. This was a realistic style of direction that was absolutely right for Ayckbourn’s ironic and very funny farce. Congratulations to all concerned.
