I was accompanied by my 7 year old Great Grandson Andrew, for this visit to the annual "play for children" presented by Codsall Drama Group. Producer Nikki Ellis was making her debut into the world of production and she maintained the Group's high standard.
It was beautifully cast with a pretty Beauty (Alexandra Hughes) and a beastly Beast (Andy Cholerton). The village gossip (Ann Escritt) was the storyteller and helped the continuity of the action - appearing complete with her knitting which got longer and longer everytime she appeared! The Beast's housekeeper Jonquiline (Wendy Peterson) kept order in the castle and helped to him to find his dream girl. The rest of the cast joined in the fun and the singing and dancing and included the Ugly Sisters, a Witch, the village Handyman and the village Elder. Sound and lighting was good and the costumes added to the "pantomime" feel of the occasion.
There was a really good atmosphere in the hall with an audience consisting of children, parents and grandparents and everyone participated in "booing and singing" in all the right places. Its always an afternoon of fun and we had a lovely afternoon. Andrew was taken to the Birmingham Christmas Market immediately after the play but as he told me the following day "It wasn't as good a Beauty and the Beast Grandma!!
I think that makes the play a success in anyone's language.
