It was lovely once again to be invited to The Hertford Theatre, this time to see the HD&OS production of “ Beauty and the Beast”.
This was a traditional “Panto” in every way, featuring a principal boy and girl, a goodie and baddie and of course in this particular case two pantomime Dames!
There was lots of comedy and audience participation throughout the evening.
Director, Malcolm is to be congratulated for bringing this excellent production to the stage.
Musical Director, Andy Merrifield brought the panto to life under his direction, the choice of songs was very good, all the vocals were of a high standard, and there were some lovely harmonies throughout.
Louise Gurd’s choreography was good too, although she can still learn a lot from Malcolm Hollows wealth of experience as a director/choreographer in terms of precision and uniformity.
It was lovely to see the junior chorus, all of them clearly enjoying the experience and no doubt thinking of future roles to come.
There were very good performances from all the principals.
Jim Markey and Daniel Goode were a very funny as sisters Simples and Dimples, although some of the jokes were a little near the mark for a matinee performance. However both had an excellent rapport with the audience.
Elaine Miller showed good comic timing in the role of Jimmy Riddle and held the audience well.
Natasha Easton was a very sweet Belle and played to the audience showing her experience with the art of pantomime. The youngsters hopefully will listen and learn. The theme from “Friends” was excellent.
In contrast, Nikki Milton played a very evil Grimelza. Characterization was convincing and the audience Boo’d and Hiss’d every time she appeared.
Helen Budd as Prince / Beast was convincing and the echo mic helped convince the audience that he had in fact changed.
Julia Markey made for an unusual magic mirror but in this particular version of the story it seemed to work, I can’t just put my finger on why but it did!
Sam Morris and Carmelo Morris as Snivel and Snide, are comedians in the making and with a little more experience and a lot more guidance they will be a comedy duo to be reckoned with. Well-done boys.
Graham Lay, Louise Kirtley, David Curling and little Trixie Wraith all deserve a mention too for giving good performances in their roles.
The principals were backed by a very able young chorus line so well done to you all.
The technical team played a good part in this production.
The scenery and costumes were all very good and colourful.
Make up, lighting and sound all greatly enhanced this pantomime too. Overall it’s a Well Done to the entire company!
Once again thank you HD&OS for your wonderful hospitality and for a most enjoyable matinee.
