I always look forward to visiting Helensburgh Savoy and this year was no exception. A favourite show, Beauty and The Beast has something for everyone. Well sung and staged the opening number Belle was bright and captured the audience’s attention. Beauty and The Beast has many great characters, and early on we were introduced to Belle played by Morgan Harrison. Her portrayal of the role was soft and tender and I particularly liked ‘Home’ and ‘There’s Been A Change in Me’. Gaston, played by Kyle Rapallini had confidence and swagger, and played the role well. His sidekick Le Fou, David McMaster, was funny in contrast, and they worked well together. The Beast was played by Michael Doyle and was performed with great ease and the transition towards the end of the story was well handled. Maurice, played by Mark Trick was well performed and there were some lovely moments between him and Belle. There was a lot of great storytelling from Lumière played by Emily MacGillivray, and her accent was excellent, as were her vocals and acting. Cogsworth, played by Gareth Williams, and Madame De La Grande Bouche, played by Louise McCahery both gave excellent performances throughout the production, and the costumes were managed with ease. The bubbly and flirtatious Babette was played very well by Emily Craig, and Florence Merrett in the role of Mrs. Potts delivered the title song Beauty and The Beast with great poignancy, setting the scene well for the Beast and Belle. Chip, played by Elle McMaster at the performance I attended, coped admirably in the teacup and her diction was excellent.Supporting principal roles were all acted with ease. The costumes and make-up were excellent and added to the overall success of the show. The staging of this production was well done under the direction of Roz Philips. Principal and ensemble singing was very well controlled and there was good connection between the stage and band under the musical direction of Pamela Frew. Choreography was well done and ‘Be Our Guest’ was a highlight ensemble piece in the show. As always there was great use of the stage and performing area, making great use of the set design by Euan Forrest. Scenes changes ran smoothly, and the enchanted rose continued to drop its petals until Belle finally tells the beast that she loves him and breaks the spell.

In conclusion, "Beauty and The Beast" was a delightful experience that showcased great talent and creativity, making my visit to Helensburgh Savoy a memorable one once again.
