I was eager to visit STARS for the first time for their production of “Beauty and the Beast”. I really enjoy the power that pantomime brings, especially in giving young people opportunity to perform on stage. I want to note how impressed I was that there were three junior members performing in the band, this further gives opportunity for them to experience playing in a pit, and in my year so far, I have not seen this anywhere else – well done on maximising opportunity for young people in the arts.

"Beauty and the Beast" is a timeless fairy tale that tells the story of Belle, a bright and compassionate young woman who finds herself in an enchanted castle. Captured by the Beast, a prince cursed by an enchantress, Belle discovers the castle's enchanted staff and their quest to break the curse. As Belle and the Beast spend time together, a deep and unexpected connection develops. The tale explores themes of love, inner beauty, and the transformative power of compassion. Ultimately, it's a story of breaking curses, finding true love, and discovering the beauty within.

The role of "Belle" was skilfully brought to life by the talented Scarlett Springhall. Her portrayal not only demonstrated a remarkable singing ability but also showcased her ability to hold her own against the adult principal performers with grace and confidence. It was truly a standout performance, highlighting Scarlett's exceptional talent and contribution to the overall success of the production. Well done!

The role of the Beast in this captivating production was dual cast, adding a dynamic layer to the character's portrayal. When graced with the presence of “Prince Trueheart”, the character came to life through the compelling performance of Joshua Kay. As the narrative unfolded and “Beast” took centre stage, Russell Billingham seamlessly embraced the role, delivering a captivating portrayal of the cursed creature. This dual casting added to the nuance to the character's complex transformation and maximised the casting potential for the show.

Carol Keen assumed the role of “Dame Smelle”, a character who effortlessly had the audience in stitches with her impeccable comedic timing. Beyond her comedic prowess, Carol's vocal abilities were also a standout feature, adding entertainment to the production. Her portrayal of Dame Smelle undoubtedly contributed to the overall enjoyment of the audience, combining humour and musicality in a memorable performance. Kudos to Carol Keen for bringing such joy and talent to the stage!

The dynamic duo of “Carlos”, portrayed by the talented Joshua Ashton, and “Chico”, brought to life by the skilled Evangeline Wright, added a delightful touch of humour and entertainment to the production. Joshua Ashton's character acting, and impressive vocal abilities infused the performance with a great deal of humour. The chemistry between them was palpable, showcasing their ability to work seamlessly together and enhance the overall comedic atmosphere of the production. Their collaborative efforts further ensured the audience enjoyed the show.

The production featured two contrasting fairies, "Goody Two Shoes" portrayed by Samantha Wright and "Fairy Bovver Boots" played by Àine Rochester. These characters added a dynamic element to the storyline, introducing a captivating rivalry. While "Goody Two Shoes" passionately protected the Beast's chances of finding true love, "Fairy Bovver Boots" sought to thwart these efforts. The interplay between the two fairies not only infused the narrative with tension and excitement but also contributed to the thematic depth of the production, exploring the forces at play in the quest for love and transformation.

A special mention is undoubtedly deserved for Catherine Frank, whose portrayal of “Pierre” truly stole the show. Catherine's character acting, impressive accent, and commanding stage presence were not only noted but also added a remarkable flair to the overall production. Her ability to embody the character with such finesse and captivate the audience's attention is truly commendable. Well done to Catherine for delivering a standout performance and leaving a lasting impression on me, but your audience.

The show was elevated by the incredible energy and talent of the ensemble, whose enthusiastic support enhanced all the major musical numbers. The entire ensemble appeared fully engaged and delivered stellar performances, contributing significantly to the overall success of the production. Kudos to the energetic chorus for their outstanding contributions, special mention to Ged Dogherty as “Town Crier”, Izzy Pearson as “Prince Dobbin” and Lucy Barrett and Alfie Webster as “Dobbin” the horse!

Overall, a good pantomime that maximised opportunity - I look forward to my next visit.
