I always look forward to my visits to this society’s productions as they consistently provide high quality entertainment. This visit was even more eagerly anticipated as I wanted to see how they would manage such a traditionally large set on such a small stage. I was amazed as they had built their own and how professional it looked! Not only that but the backstage crew switched it seamlessly between the scenes. This was backed up by excellent costumes and a first rate lighting plot. The prologue was delivered using shadow puppets and this was particularly effective as was the change from Beast to Prince. This was covered by skilful lighting and a haze. I haven’t mentioned the actors yet but there wasn’t a weak link amongst the principals. They created their characters and kept them throughout the performance including accents. The solo singing, ensembles and harmony singing from the chorus were excellent. I find it very difficult to single out any of the principals but I must mention Adam Gregory (The Beast) as he demonstrated what a rich and powerful voice he has and yet, at the same time, brought out the vulnerability of the character...Julie Winch in her first musical lead role was ideal as Belle. The whole performance was backed up by a well balanced orchestra. Well done to everyone concerned in bringing this well-loved musical to fruition at The Assembly Rooms!
