It’s not very often, if ever, you get a 15 year old who can carry a whole show on his shoulders in a mammoth part but Wickersley Youngstars certainly had when Sam Guttridge played the title role in their production of Barnum.

Sam was excellent, delivering his numerous lines with ease and singing all the songs with a professionalism you might expect from someone twice his age. Many of the songs were similar to Gilbert and Sullivan’s “patter” songs, being very quick and tongue twisting, but every word could be heard when Sam delivered them, all this together with his accomplished circus skills made him perfect for the role.

Joining Sam on stage was Caitlin Deakin as his long suffering wife Charity, or Chairy as she is known. Caitlin has a beautiful voice and as with Sam was able to show off her fine acting skills. I especially enjoyed their duet “The Colours of my Life” which was brilliant.

Introducing the various aspects of Barnum’s life was the Ringmaster who later became his partner, Bailey, played with ease by Harvey Cartlidge, his good looks, acting abilities and fine singing made him perfect for the part.

Adding to the principal line up of this show we had Nicole Flinders as Joice Heth whose talents came to the forefront not only in her singing but also her dancing abilities, Maisie Vera played an excellent Jenny Lind, her singing and acting proved to be a hit with the audience, I particularly enjoyed her scene with Barnum when he was teaching her to speak English. One small guy who I am sure stole the hearts of the whole audience was Joe Wood as General Tom Thumb, again Joe was perfect in this role.

Credit must be given to the chorus in this show who were able to show off their dancing abilities in the many numbers as well as sing the numerous songs which combined with circus skills made for a top show.

Many congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic show which I am certain was enjoyed by the whole audience.
