Bad Girls

Chorley Youth theatre is run by its members who are aged between 11 and 19 years of age. They produce, direct, choose and stage their own shows with a little help from the adults of Chorley Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society (CADOS). Their first production for 2014 was a play based on the story of ‘Bad Girls’ written by Jacqueline Wilson and adapted for the stage by Vicky Ireland. The storey revolves around Mandy who is being bullied at school, and takes a look at the effects and consequences of bullying. It also examines Mandy’s relationship with new friend Tanya and the influence Tanya has on her life. The story contains many life lessons for both the actors and the audience.

This was an enjoyable and thought provoking production that flowed well and kept the audience’s attention. The length of the play was also just right for the demographic of the audience.  The cast of principals and supporting characters were well cast and suited their roles very well. It is difficult to highlight specific performances as there was quite a large cast and all involved were very talented. However a mention should be given to Lucy McManus who played the important role of Mandy the central character very well. There was an occasional problem with diction and the delivery of lines for a few of the actors but I am sure these skills will develop as they gain more experience.

The stage area was utilized very effectively and efficiently which helped the flow of this production meaning there was no waiting for the audience between scenes. The set was minimalistic and was more than appropriate, well done to props, stage crew, sound, lighting and also costumes which all suited the roles well.

Congratulations to Kira Brookfield and to all involved in this production including front of house for a job well done and a very enjoyable evening. There are some very talented young people at Chorley Youth Theatre.
