This was the first time I had seen a Brownhills MTC production and I hope that it will not be my last.

From the opening curtain to the curtain call, this gritty production lived up to all expectations.  This show was based on the television series of the same name and had everything that you would expect.  Moody lighting and the wonderful music added to the evening.

The story tells the tale of Helen Stewart (Philippa Mills) the new wing governor of Larkhall prison who battles with officers Jim Fenner and Sylvia Hollamby, both played superbly by Pete Brown and Belinda Richards.  We meet the top dog, Yvonne Atkins (Louise Hewitt), the old timer Noreen Briggs (Jean Edge), Shell Dockley (Katie Rowley) and Denny Blood (Amber Smith), plus all of our other television favourites including the two Julies (Helena King and Charley Greatrix).   The death on the wing of Rachel Hicks (Katy Ball) implicates Jim Fenner and with Helen about to lose her job the women decide to nail Jim once and for all. The number one (Lee Williams) likes a quiet life and wants to get rid of Helen, but the women of Larkhall and Officer Justin Mattison (Brett Dewsbury) want to get rid of Jim Fenner

I also enjoyed the singing in this production especially hearing Sanj Robinson-Choongh singing 'Freedom Road' and 'The Future is Bright' sung my Jim, Sylvia and the officers.

Directed by Sonia Cameron this production was not for the faint hearted and had many adult themes running through it but the cast pulled out all the stops to ensure a good night’s entertainment.  The set, built by member Pete Smith was very effective and was added to by the excellent lighting effects.  I especially liked how the change of scenes were carried out, by using this effective lighting and having all the stage crew dressed as prison staff.

Well done to BMTC, I look forward to seeing you all in 'The Sound of Music'.
