Originally a TV Soap winning many awards. The musical version created around 2007. Keith Thomas dramatic direction of this unusual musical Bad Girls was ably assisted by his brilliant cast who all did justice to their parts. The inmates of Larkhall Prison were well chosen, Nikki Wade (Jenny Baxter) played the troubled character well, Helen Stewart (Polly King) the Wing Governor was perfect in the control of the inmates coupled with professional acting. . The two Julies (Denise Hodgkiss and Karen Scull) were tremendous as the Mrs Mopps and canteen assistants giving the parts an amusing relief from the darker side of prison life. The stage presence of Yvonne Atkins (Hilary Harwood) in both acting singing commanded attention her character demanding to be seen and heard. Sylvia ‘Body Bag’ Hollamby (Kate Williams) and Principal Officer Jim Fenner (Doug McLeod) were a well matched duo, their song and dance routines and control of the inmates were complementary to the characters. The rest of the principals gave good support as did the ensemble. Steven Beans small orchestra out of sight did justice to the music and performed well Alison Chapmans dance routines were well executed. Stage Manager Chris Morley assistant Mike Payne deputy Richard Wells and stage crew created a functional prison set with Eddie King’s effective lighting coupled with excellent sound effects by John Radley.
Certainly a different and thought provoking Musical well performed by all concerned
