“Back to the Eighties”- Centre Stage Productions in association with TheManx G. & S. Society- - 16.10.2018
This musical was written by Neil Gooding, with original music adaptation by Scott Copeman and revised orchestrations and arrangements by Brett Foster. This Society are looking forward to their future performances of more traditional musicals.
The decision was taken to present this “ Juke Box “ musical and it has attracted not only new members but also has attracted a different audience who have visited the island from far and wide. I had never seen this show before and I was very much looking forward to this Production being performed in the beautiful Gaiety Theatre in Douglas.
The talented Director, Val Cowley had chosen a Production Team with very high standards of commitment and skills.Choreographers, Gem Last and Hannah Taylor devised some slick and innovative routines reflecting the 1980”s music and showing great empathy with each number. Costumes and accessories, hair and makeup, were just what were required.David Holland, Musical Director achieved a great performance from all on stage and also fronted his own eighties band “ Totally Eighties “ who appeared on stage, performing, playing and vocalizing with the cast. The sound balance was excellent as each 80”s hit followed on at a great pace, one after another.
The show opened in the present day, as Corey Palmer,Senior, played confidently by Tom Pamplin, was listening to the radio and upon hearing “Wake me up Before you Go Go “ began to reminisce about his days at William Ocean High School in America, wondering what happened to his friends from that time. This musical follows the lives and loves of the students in their final year before their Prom Night and features so many outstanding numbers from that period, each linked to the story of three friends who are all vying for position of Senior Year President.
Corey Palmer Junior, Josh Molyneux, Michael Feldman, Isaac Murtagh and Feargal McFerrin, Joseph Long played their roles with enthusiasm, confidence and all round abilities whilst Alexandra Slater as Tiffany Houston, Shay Marsden as Cyndi Gibson and Jennifer Hill as Eileen Reagan were the perfect foils for the three men. I did not see any week link in anyone on stage.
Val Cowley, Director showed all her experience with this Production, ensuring that all her talented cast understood what was required of them. Val must have been delighted with the final product.
The audience left for home with a spring in their step with the memories of a wonderful evening of theatre.
