Formed only 16 months ago, Lollipop Youth Theatre brought us back to the mid 80s and for many of the audience happy memories of an era that the cast of 32 youngsters would not have experienced. Of course they may have heard some of the songs, but singing them in front of the MD and musicians located at the rear of the stage is not an easy task, but one they met with credit.
Set in the USA, we hear the story of the graduating senior class of William Ocean High School, as remembered through the eyes of 30 year old Corey Palmer (James Geary). The 17 year old Corey (Mason Carr) falls for Tiffany Houston (Charlotte Peck) who only has eyes for the less than principled but universally popular Michel Feldman (Hugh Jeavons). All three gave a very good account of themselves in maintaining their characters and leading some great numbers including ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, ‘Footloose’, ’I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)’ and especially ‘Michael’s Election Rap’!
Top marks for Ryan Simcock as the geeky ‘Feargal McFerrin 111’ whose best friend is his computer and teachers Jack Brown (Mr Cocker) and Abbie Groombridge (Sheena Brannigan) gave us confident portrayals of their stormy relationship following his discovery that she was the subject of Penthouse’s centrefold. Joining the school later is ‘Eileen Reagan’ played confidently by Jessica Lewis and notably leading ‘Walking on Sunshine’, accompanied strongly by ‘Debbie’ (Ellen Fearnley) and Laura (Callie Geary). Sophie Mason as ‘Cindy’ gave us an excellent rendition of Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’.
Each of the election candidates were well supported by their respective gangs. The set, lighting and costumes were all in-keeping and I liked Corey’s projected dream sequence. The rest of the cast gave great support and despite in some cases their inexperience, their enjoyment was infectious. The production team headed by Director Holly Fields should be congratulated on giving the opportunity to many of the youngsters not only to gain confidence but to grow their love of theatre.
