This was my first time visiting The Great Horton Theatre Company as District Representative and I was invited to “Back in the Swing” Christmas Concert. This was an absolute delight from start to finish and although it took place in St Winefride’s Church Hall it was the perfect setting for such an event to a packed out audience.

The evening was a combination of songs, carols, festive tunes, Christmas quiz and readings by members of the society all kept in the safe hands of the MC, John Mason.

The readings during the evening were “Not Smart Enough for a Smart Phone” read by Bob Crackles, “Son of God” by Nora Walker, “For Everybody” by Audrey O’Keefe and “A Christmas Poem” by Rita Schofield. The Quiz Master was Richard Bentley who just managed to control the very excited number of winners to a very tense tie-breaker. A couple of my favourites from the evening were “Gaudete” and “O Holy Night” which were performed with excellence under the direction of Musical Director Rosie Walsh. Congratulations to Rosie on putting such a wide and wonderful musical programme together.

In the interval myself, my partner and Les Smith were treated to Christmas cake and mince pies, as my Christmas cake still lay on my plate as I was enjoying my mince pie, my partner kept asking after eating his “Are you sure you want yours?” his eyes greedily eyeing up my cake.

Another great performance was of “Let it Be” a wonderful moving tribute to Stuart Swaine whom the performance was dedicated.

Thank you for such a fantastic and enchanting evening. The rest of Christmas is now well set up and our festive spirit is in full flow!
