Avenue Q is written by Jeff Whitty & the music & lyrics are by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marks. Like the much loved children’s programme Sesame Street, in this musical puppets are friends and monsters are good and kind. The similarity ends there though in this hilarious adult tale.
Full of wonderful numbers under the musical direction of Paul O’ Leary this was first rate entertainment .
Clearly a great deal of preparation had taken place to develop the final piece, including puppet workshops for the actors and the Director Justin Day taking a trip to New York to incorporate photographs into the programme and seeing Avenue Q off Broadway. It would be difficult to single out any of the cast as each one played their roles so professionally. However Christian Norton as Princeton & Lizzie Buckingham as Kate Monster played their parts to perfection.
The use of grey casuals for the puppeteers soon made the audience forget they were there, though one tiny criticism- the coloured tools and outfit for Gary Coleman’s puppeteer were unnecessary .
A couple of minor technical hitches but all in all a first class show worthy of a professional stage .
