Avenue Q

This show was a first for me, it does come with a warning about its content, yes it was a bit rude and totally politically incorrect, with adult themes, but something so different I became enthralled.

The story explores the life of its main character ‘Princeton’. At the beginning of the show I was fascinated to watch the Actor / Puppeteers working and it wasn’t long before the puppet and the person become one performer. The main challenge of this particular musical is the actor’s manipulation of the puppets. Princeton, a college student who moves into Avenue Q after graduating and meets a whole bunch of zany neighbours, including the lovely kinder garden teacher ‘Kate Monster’, I thought one of the funniest of the monster bunch is the crude ‘Trekkie Monster’, whose number ‘The Internet Is For Porn’ had the audience in stitches. What a team effort both on and off stage, congratulations to all the cast who brought the puppets to life, all were excellent, but I did feel that Hayley Dent as ‘Kate Monster’ and ‘Lucy the Slut’, the name says it all, played these two characters with ease and confidence and brought these puppets to life with some good singing of ‘There’s A Fine, Fine Line’. I also enjoyed Scott McGuckin, playing ‘Brian’ and singing of ‘I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today’, really funny.

There are some good songs in this show, all were very enjoyable. What a team effort both on and off stage, this musical was staged with an enormous amount of hard work by everybody. The set was excellent, it worked so well with some good lighting and sound, and not forgetting the Musical Director for doing a great job. This was a very funny show with a bevy of brilliant songs.
