Putting Are You Being Served? on stage is never an easy job. It’s one of those shows that everyone thinks they know inside out, so expectations arrive fully formed and ready to judge. The script sticks closely to the original TV version by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, which means the jokes, characters and timing are all very familiar — for better or worse — and seeing how that translates to live theatre is half the fun. Although I felt that certain comments were inappropriate for today, they still made me chuckle, and the rest of the audience thoroughly enjoyed them.

This production was fuelled by genuine passion for the show, which was evident throughout. Several scenes stood out, thanks to outstanding acting by a cast that fit their roles perfectly and were immediately identifiable. Nikki Ivison gave a standout performance as Mr Humphries; she took on the role after just six rehearsals when the original actor had to step down for health reasons. Nikki skilfully captured John Inman's unique mannerisms, delivery, and style, making her portrayal truly exceptional.

The opening act began at a gentle pace, probably influenced by expectations set by the TV sitcom. The cast drew comparisons to the original characters, and while the humour was present, its delivery lacked a little pace. Nevertheless, the German scene stood out as well-prepared and ultimately provided an exceptionally entertaining and humorous performance.

Act 2 moved quickly, embracing a classic farcical style. The addition of the Spanish revolution storyline heightened the drama and introduced a fresh twist that delighted the audience. The sincere commitment of the cast and crew was evident throughout the performance. The dedication shown by everyone on stage clearly reflected the company's pride in its work. The set was particularly remarkable, featuring imaginative special effects such as animated insects and an impressive lobster scene.

It was a pleasure to return to the Conquest Theatre for Are You Being Served?. As Louise noted, some of the humour may not align with modern sensitivities in 2026, but the play remains true to its origins during the television series’ heyday with all its innuendos.

Having directed this production many years ago, I recall the challenges it presents, from a temperamental lift to the infamous dummy—complete with false teeth hidden in the trunks—much to the surprise of the well-known Grace Brothers staff members.

Act Two transports the menswear and ladieswear staff to a holiday in Spain. On arrival, their accommodation booked for  the ‘Grace Brothers’ is not ready, forcing them instead into the ‘Penty Houses’—which turn out to be ‘Tenty Houses’ (tents). Staging this sequence, along with the resulting antics, is no easy feat. Add the complexity of message exchanges and the use of puppetry to bring food to life, and it becomes clear how much careful planning and direction is required. These elements were handled well.

Congratulations to all involved—especially Nikki Ivison—for delivering such an enjoyable evening and transporting the audience back to the 1970s and early 1980’s.

I now look forward to the next iconic production, an all-time musical favourite: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I’m eager to see how this one will be brought to life on stage.
