Broad Way Players is a small community theatre company and this production showcased everyone
in the cast well. With limited stage and backstage space, the 14 members of the cast worked hard
on and off stage, to bring us a very enjoyable evening.
The premise of the show is that the company could perform anywhere, and they demonstrated this
by taking us, musically, from Norfolk to London via Scotland, Newcastle, York, Blackpool,
Manchester Liverpool, Wales, Birmingham, Dunstable and Cambridge. And that was only the first
half! In the second half they traversed the USA coming back to their home in Lowestoft for the
finale.
There were some excellent comedy moments amongst the singing and dancing, and I loved the
way, Director, Sarah Meers used the songs with a slightly different context. Especially the trolley
song with a supermarket trolley, that was just genius!
The company: Caz Meers, Connor Blowers, Elisha Reynolds, Ian Gooch, Jackie Hensley, Jamie
Culham, Jane Porter, Kelly Sheppard-Jones, Margaret Binks, Oliver Dunn (nice dancing Oliver) Rob
Damerell, Sarah Meers, Scott Newman and Terry Chitty did a great job performing and, clearly, having
a blast whilst they did it. I think that had the most impact on me, how much the company and, by
extension, the audience, were enjoying this light hearted production.
Costumes were well thought out, colourful and appropriate. Lighting was limited in this small, but
perfectly formed, theatre but used well. It was brave to do a UV section, but this was done
extremely well and makes a nice change in a show. If I must criticise, I thought the backing tracks
were too loud. Given that there were no mics being used, the cast projected well and when a piano
backing was used it was fine. However, there were occasions when I couldn’t hear some of the
singing.
Might I also suggest that songs are chosen not just to suit the ‘storyline’ but also for the person
singing them. Some of the less experienced performers were struggling to sing a song that was not
really in their range. A slight adjustment to the key or a different song would make it more enjoyable
for them. Having said they they all did very well.
A lovely evening’s entertainment, in a beautiful small theatre, with a welcoming front of house team,
who could ask for more? The evening was complete when Jamie proposed to Sarah on stage to the
great delight of cast and audience, congratulations.
Thank you, Broad Way Players.
