First performed on Broadway in 1934 with Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter Anything Goes - a classic American musical, has been revived on numerous occasions both in USA and Britain and is a staple for Amateur Operatic Societies.
Having seen the show umpteen times over the last twenty years or so it still comes up fresh as a daisy here and this production by Judy Megarry was no exception and the show simply fizzed along. The overture had the audience tapping their feet along with the orchestral beat and well known music.
Reno Sweeney (Tessa Sheehy} followed with “I get a kick out of you” and we got a kick out of her. She was superb and tailormade for the role singing, acting, and looking good was the undoubted star of the show but there was no shortfall from the whole cast and ensemble.
Steve Miller (Billy Crocker) gave a fine performance and was chased by Reno but he was only interested in Sophie Jessop, (Hope Harcourt), a new face to me, who gave a lovely understated performance, was betrothed to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (Matt Tebbatt) excellent in the “silly ass” role which was much amused by the audience.
Needless to say Billy got Hope and Reno captured her English Lord and all ended happily with the whole Company performing a superb Finale. Choreography, Lighting, Sound, and back stage Crew all played their parts and the whole evening was a delight.
