Very occasionally on going to the theatre, I experience something very, very special. This particular evening had it all. The set, props, costumes and lights were all of a high standard. The orchestra was the best I have heard in my first year in this role. Throughout the evening the director had moved everything - all the entrances and exits were absolutely superb, and all involved knew exactly what she expected of them. She is a very proficient director, having been involved in theatre and dance since the age of 5, and has appeared in more than 60 musicals herself. Her musical director, who has been associated with theatre in Retford for some 30+ years, groomed all the orchestra superbly. They in turn gave him 120%. It was fun to see a live dog being used during the production. It is impossible to select any character for individual attention, as they all worked for each other, themselves and us the audience. The audience was tapping their feet when we realised early on that the balance that had been achieved between orchestra pit and the stage was of a very professional nature. Whilst on the subject of tapping, the tap dancers were brilliant. The small set changes needed throughout the evening were carried out swiftly and without any fuss. The end of Act One and the Finale were performed to such a degree that I believe they will live in the audience's memory for some time to come. I spoke with the Mayor of Retford and we both agreed that the talent available in Retford for dramatic entertainment is to be admired, and the whole town should be proud of what is being offered. Being experienced myself, it was so clear that everybody had worked exceptionally hard and they should all be very pleased with what they have achieved.
Two final points I would like to make. When lifting a production to the next level, an important component of this is the lights - and they can only be described as totally first-rate. The last point is that the diction of every member was clear and precise, and the orchestra never once drowned it out. Well done Retford, I now await Cinderella in December.
