I know the lovely music from this musical by Cole Porter but this is the first time I have had the opportunity to see the show. I really enjoyed the evening. This 1930’s Musical, “ Anything Goes” contains some well known, memorable numbers and the talented and enthusiastic Musical Director Helen Harrison brought out the best performances from both those on stage and the experienced members of the orchestra. Everyone certainly did credit to the great music. Director, Alison Thornton has worked hard to bring the rather weak story line to life. Elaine Morrison, Choreographer typified the period with some exuberant and polished routines. Costumes and props were colourful and appropriate to the period. The simple set was very effective and together with lighting created the correct atmosphere on board The S.S. American. Sound design and quality were excellent and there was good diction from all principals and ensemble.
I read in the programme that Keri Ward was delighted to be playing the part of Reno Sweeney in this her first show with S.A.P.O.S.. I also was delighted with her performance, which was outstanding both for her acting ability and vocal range. She was completely immersed in the role and held the show together with her confident and mature performance. Dave Swift was excellent as Moonface Martin and showed his natural comic timing and versatility in this very funny performance. I felt that one or two of the other principals were not as strong but this did not spoil what was a most enjoyable visit. I must mention two delightful cameo performances by Suzi Q McQuiggan as Evangeline and Don Green as Ship’s Captain who both showed their quality and experience My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with you. It is always a pleasure to catch up with friends as we travel around my area and we are looking forward to our next visit.
