Those wishing to board “SS American” would not have wanted weather like Helensburgh had — cold and wet — but the welcome for The Savoy’s audience was certainly warm.  Cameron Downs (Billy Crocker) in his debut with the Savoy, gave an exuberant performance, well suited to the part.  Elise McLean (Reno Sweeney) donned her acting, rather than directing, mantle and played the part well, aiding and abetting Billy in his perils on board.  Not least of these was avoiding boss-man Graham Phillips (Eli Whitney) handicapped by short-sightedness caused by Kenny McLean (Moonface Martin) stealing his extremely powerful spectacles.  More newcomers to Savoy were Emma Little (Hope Harcourt) and Callum Downs (Lord Evelyn Oakley) the would-be honeymooners who managed to get sorted out at the end.  Much hilarity throughout with Laura Watt (Erma) creating havoc with the crew and May Connelly (Mother Harcourt) finding lost love with Eli but temporarily losing her pet pooch.  Lots of well-known songs in this show were ably performed by principals and the chorus, members of which were obliged to play lots of parts such as press photographers, FBI agents, ship’s crew and passengers.  The madcap storyline kept this audience laughing at the right bits and the buzz as they went home told its own satisfying tale.  Well done again Savoy!
