The society had lined up a very talented cast for its production of this fabulous musical, which has certainly stood the test of time. To my mind a musical should be pure escapism and that’s exactly what we had here. The storyline may be crazy with stowaways, gangsters, high society and unrequited love, all on board an ocean liner, but of course, what it’s really all about is the wonderful music of Cole Porter, still fresh after all these years.
The single set was that of the SS American. This was quite minimal, comprising a bridge, beyond which was the suggestion of a ship, while either side, stairs ran down to the stage. This worked really well, leaving room for the cast to move around freely, especially during the large, company numbers.
Darrell Williams gave a good impersonation of the rather ridiculous Lord Evelyn Oakley. Listening in to conversations in an effort to learn some Americanisms, he makes himself look even more stupid when he uses them to try and impress. A good rendition, in character, of “The Gypsy in Me”.
A strong performance from Cath Dickerson as Evangeline Harcourt, determined to marry her daughter off to Lord Evelyn in the name of social status. Hope Harcourt and her real love, Billy Crocker were well played by Leah Gaskell and Sean Marcs. There song and dance numbers were a joy to watch.
Lucy Miller was well cast as nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and gave a terrific performance. Her strong singing voice belted out the iconic musical numbers as she sang, danced and acted her way through this demanding role. What’s more she always looked as though she was enjoying every minute.
There were other good performances from John Quick as Wall Street banker Eli Whitney, Ollie Pajak as gangster Moonface Martin and Charlotte Crosby as the not so bright, but loveable Erma, who sang a great solo of “Buddy Beware”.
Well done to Ship’s Captain Abbi Pajak who was joined by the sailors, welcoming guests on board in song.
There were so many good performances in this production. Although too many to mention individually in this report, everyone from principals to the strong supporting cast came together and really gave it their all.
Choreography including some high energy numbers had been well devised by Gill Gammage who put the cast through their paces. Well done to those who dusted off their tap shoes for the occasion!
The production was very well costumed with the only exception being the sailor’s trousers, or should I say pants. I am a stickler for detail and found the varying lengths rather jarring. This though is my only criticism across the whole show.
The band under the direction of Tony Crosby provided excellent accompaniment with good balance of sound. Lighting and sound were good.
Congratulations BSMTC. It really was Delightful, Delicious and De-Lovely!
