Cole Porter’s music and lyrics for this show, first produced in 1934, continue to remain popular with today’s theatregoers and this was strongly evidenced by the substantial audience that attended and enjoyed RMT’s latest production. The well cast principals adopted excellent characterisation, especially John Hackett as Elisha J Whitney, Andy Lee as Moonface Martin, Belinda Graham as Erma, and Rob Persani as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. My gold stars go to Sally Mitchell as Reno Sweeney, Ally Ambrose as Hope and Tom Johnson as Billy, who all delivered superb performances. The competent musicians under Mark Checkley’s direction produced the wonderful tunes this show contains and the vocals from principals and chorus alike were very accomplished. The opening scene – a smoky Manhattan bar was speedily transformed by a very efficient stage crew into the SS American. The carefully chosen costumes and choreography by Nicola Sandall contributed significantly to this production which had freshness and vitality, the tap routine was extremely exhilarating - all in all a classic example of musical theatre. Congratulations to everyone involved in delivering this super show.
