Anything Goes - is an iconic joyful musical of the early 1930s written by Cole Porter famous for his memorable tunes such as “I Get A Kick Out of You”, “You’re the Top”, ‘Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and of course “Anything Goes”.  Featuring heart-warming romance and show-stopping dance routines to cap the delightful melodies.  At this, the final performance before the theatre is refurbished, many of the volunteers who help to keep the theatre going had been invited to attend to honour all the work they have done.

Congratulations to the set designer and the construction team who put together such  a superb set of exceedingly high quality.  It must have been a shame to take it down. The side of the SS American complete with upper deck had been constructed at the back of the stage with two staircases winding down to the stage floor on either side.  Multiple entrances gave the cast easy access to the stage.  Every scene was cleverly lit paying attention to the time of day and style of the numbers.  The sound system was used well, and the cast were heard to perfection in balance with the orchestra – no mean feat.  Fantastic costumes from top to toe - the style, the colours, the accessories everything was top notch.  What more can I say.

The 10-piece orchestra including the director Matt Greaves created an excellent sound. The balance between the band and the singing was superb throughout.  The quality of the singing was first class both for principals and ensemble.

The director, Kate Bennett, is to be congratulated for encapsulating the era of the trans-Atlantic cruise ship on the stage of the Alexandre Theatre.  Whilst sad that it was the last performance before refurbishment it is exciting to think of future productions in a renovated space.  This has been one or the hardest reports to write as there were no weak links, no poor interpretation, no slip ups – the whole evening was stupendous.  It is so refreshing to see a top-class show – the word “amateur” is totally redundant.  BROS have such talent amongst their ranks.  The principal line up was exceptionally talented – they executed the songs so well it is difficult to pick out any one individual performance.  The characterisations had been well-researched and rehearsed so that the essential mannerisms came naturally – from Preacher to Angel from Ivy League Wall Street banker to Ship’s Captain, from English Lord to American debutante each and every role was outstanding.  All the ensemble numbers were exceedingly well choreographed by Sarah Callender and her assistant Amy Langridge.  The ensemble tap dancing was a joy to behold.

The whole show was a joy to watch; every aspect up to a professional standard and the whole evening was a delight.
