It was great to be at a NODA society for the first time in a while. In 2019 Phoenix Players performed ‘A Phoenix Night’. Move on two years and a period we would all like to put behind us and we had – Another Phoenix Night.

With a very much reduced audience number and guidelines in place that we are now accustomed to, such as face masks, remaining seated in the interval and drinks brought directly to you. Despite these restraints, the audience were fully appreciative of the advertised evening of sketches and songs.

The evening opened with a one act play, recently reformed by Phoenix Players elsewhere. It was unfortunate one member of the cast was unable to perform and therefore at late notice the director, Andi Hardy, needed to understudy one of the roles with the book. The play, The Transmigration Show, told of Sophie (Lisa Cowley) and her initiation into the afterlife encountering others from whom she was reincarnated with a twist at the end.  Sholto (Nick Johnson), Linda (Andi Hardy), Martha (Beth Harris) and Michael (Baz Stilinski). Each actor playing the character and telling of their demise.

The sketches and songs flowed with well-rehearsed repositioning of small items of furniture and props – receiving suitable acclaim from the audience.

The production featured well-delivered songs and clever sketches It would be wrong to name any cast member individually, however, some good timing by Graham Robson with the Father of the Bride speech and the Welsh Boys when joined by Roger Gowland were amongst the highlights. Along with the doctors waiting room a scene pulling together many doctor, doctor gags.

Congratulations to Phoenix Players for managing to bring about this evening of entertainment.

I most certainly look forward to the classic masterpiece When We Are Married in October of this year, after a previous postponement.
