Annie is a musical built around a simple message: never give up. It's a story that has stood the test of time because audiences connect with its optimism, resilience and belief that tomorrow can be better. This cast understood that message and delivered it with sincerity throughout the production.
Hazel Lawson as Annie, took on one of musical theatre's most recognisable young roles with determination, courage and commitment. Opposite her, Darren Gill gave a strong and measured performance as Oliver Warbucks, showing the gradual change in a man whose outlook on life is transformed by an unexpected friendship. Claire Mallinson delivered an entertaining performance as Miss Hannigan, balancing the character's frustration and bitterness with plenty of comic timing and a humorous delivery of Little Girls. Louis McGregor embraced the role of Rooster Hannigan with confidence and charisma, while Piper Uribe was a strong Lily St Regis, providing exactly the right amount of glamour and attitude. The transition to Ralph and Shirley Mudge was hilarious and the Easy Street number with Claire was a standout moment. Elaine Murray brought warmth and professionalism to Grace Farrell, acting as the steady and compassionate link between Annie and Warbucks. David Mitchell's Drake was suitably formal and dependable, providing a solid presence within the Warbucks household. James Dobbie took on the roles of Bert Healy, President Roosevelt and Bundles McCloskey, demonstrating versatility across three very different characters. Whether delivering sharp comic moments, portraying the authoritative Roosevelt, or bringing humour and personality to Bundles, he demonstrated good stage presence throughout. His performance as Bert Healy helped drive one of the standout scenes of the production, the radio broadcast scene. Fast-paced, funny and full of energy; tapping shoes, a ventriloquist act, the Boylan Sisters; a real highlight of the evening.
In the orphanage scenes, this group of young performers worked exceptionally well together. Skyla Johnston's Duffy, Caitlyn Houston's July, Freya Grace Simpson's Pepper, Brooke Gow's Tessie, Alyssa Wallace's Kate and Ava Grace's Molly each brought their own personalities to the stage while delivering as a believable group. Their energy, enthusiasm and commitment helped create some of the strongest moments in the production. The chemistry between the orphans felt genuine, and it was clear they enjoyed performing together.
The ensemble played an important role in bringing the world of Annie to life. From New Yorkers and servants to radio performers and members of Roosevelt's administration helping to create a sense of scale beyond the limitations of the stage. Their commitment to the quick scene changes and strong ensemble singing ensured the show maintained its pace and energy throughout.
Behind the scenes, Director and Choreographer Jenni Main guided the company through a production that was well-paced with clear storytelling. The movement and staging made effective use of the available performance space, ensuring the stage always felt busy without becoming crowded. Musical Director Billy Muir prepared the cast well, resulting in confident vocal performances and strong ensemble singing throughout the show. Both supported by Production Assistant Piper Uribe.
The set design was particularly effective. On a relatively small stage, the set was clever, slick and adaptable, allowing scenes to transition smoothly and keeping the story moving at pace. The design made excellent use of the available space and successfully created a range of locations without unnecessary complexity.
Congratulations to the cast, creative team, technical crew, front of house volunteers and everyone else involved in bringing Annie to Alyth Town Hall. You should all be proud of what you achieved together.
