Overall, this was an excellent production with many, first class individual performances. In the title role, Karen Richards gave us a feisty Annie Oakley with clear diction and accurate singing – especially useful when every number in this show is a hit number which everyone knows and loves! Karen and Keith Breasley (Frank Butler) worked well together, showing obvious well-rehearsed confidence in their roles, and certainly made the most of John Gray’s well-paced direction. Scott Nicol (Tommy Keeler) teamed up well with Hannah Wilson (Winnie Tate) giving a spirited performance, particularly, in their “Who Do You Love, I Hope” duet. A notable aspect of this production was the clarity of sound throughout, with accurate mic cueing. Even a verbal “Bang!” in lieu of a gunshot in the shooting match was forgiven by the audience! Annie’s brother and sisters were delightful and clearly enjoyed their performing experience. Short of mentioning all the minor principal parts by name, all I can say is that everyone put every effort into their individual part – comedy where required, pathos where required, and energy all the time! Last, but by no means least (I often mention them first of all!) praise must be showered on the chorus who performed magnificently, offering a first-class start and end to this gem of a show – a credit to M.D. Robert Anthony’s baton-wielding skills. Congratulations to the scenic team who made the most of the fairly tight confines of the Town Hall stage, but, nevertheless offered sufficient space for Kimberley Colliar’s choreography, which always remained in keeping with the scale of production. The show was well lit, ensuring that all characters were well seen at all times rather than falling in to the pit of using up equipment on specials rather than general facial lighting. This, together with colourful costuming added to a most enjoyable evening in Markinch Town Hall. Well done to all associated with the show!
