Central to the success of this musical is Annie herself and Olivia Matlock was a delightful young performer who portrayed her character with charm and confidence. She handled Sandy, the dog very well despite him wanting to do “his own thing” part of the time. Her fellow (Blue Team) orphans were a very believable group of young ladies who were very convincing in their ensemble work. They definitely won the hearts of the audience. Alison Broadley (Miss Hannigan) gave a lively, strong and controlled performance, whilst Matthew Kelly and Lois Baker (Rooster and Lily) brought fun and humour, particularly when disguised as Annie's long lost parents. Easy Street was one of the highlights of the show. Alan Lowe (Warbucks) gave a solid performance. All the supporting roles were well characterised, particularly Tom Brassington (Bert Healey) who delivered You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile with great gusto. Chris Towland played Drake for laughs without the stiff upper lip we have come to expect from this character. The company numbers were very well done, the Hooverville-ites gave us the real atmosphere of New York's depressive age.
