Stafford Operatic Society gave a lovely performance of the timeless classic ‘Annie’ at the Gatehouse theatre this October.

Jasmine Gardner, playing Annie, didn’t give the gutsy, over enthusiastic performance that might have been expected, but played a more sensitive, quieter character which obviously appealed to the audience, who warmed to her quickly. There were certainly some great characters amongst the orphans and they performed with great enthusiasm and confidence.

Alison Ansell, as Miss Hannigan, gave a solid performance with some good touches of humour. Jon Wilson (Oliver Warbucks) gave a soft, likeable portrayal of the billionaire. However, maybe we needed to have seen a very different side to him at the start, gruff and businesslike, before Annie worms her way into his heart and brings out the softer side. Hannah Morris, as Grace, gave a very spirited performance with a lovely delivery of the dialogue and songs. Her movement on stage was energetic and lifted every scene she was in. Rooster and Lily St. Regis, Will Wood and Sarah Dunn, worked well together and were suitably devious.

The company sang well but could have been challenged further with the movement used during the company scenes as at times it was very static.  David Phizacklea, as Drake, got the character just right, adding humour with a simple facial expression or turn of phrase whilst still maintaining the straight backed reverence of the Butler in a wealthy home.  Helen Tisdale gave a great vocal performance as Star-to-be whilst the Boylan sisters and Bert Healy brought the right amount of charm to the radio station.

The set worked well for this show, although perhaps the shanty town was a little too clean and some attention could have been given to the Christmas tree that didn’t quite look as well decorated as a billionaire might have had commissioned for his home.  The costumes were good but needed a little attention to detail (i.e. Shoes).

Once again the orchestra complimented the show perfectly under the direction of Laura Foxcroft.

Well done to all the cast, production team, crew and musicians on another successful show.
