This popular musical was well received by the audience. A strong line-up of principals, a talented group of youngsters as the orphans and a truly supportive chorus meant tuneful singing, good acting and deft footwork throughout. It's immensely important that whoever plays the title role in this show is confident and performs well. Lauren Beacock could not be faulted; she gave an excellent portrayal. Ashley Wingham was commendable as Rooster Hannigan along with Vicky Toward as his rather inebriated sister Miss Hannigan. The band accompanied well, but there were times when they were a tad over-loud and the diction could have been clearer at times. The confines of the stage at this venue mean that backcloths need to be pulled curtain-wise to create the scenes with various props added as required. The stage staff worked well together to effect smooth scene changes. I liked the way the director used the auditorium for some entries and exits with suitable lighting to highlight these. The costumes were very suitable for the era. Bruno, the dog that played Sandy was a real scene-stealer. Well done, everyone.
