Watching ‘Annie’ is a bit like going to see an old friend. With the familiar story line, dialogue and songs, it feels as if I am on stage performing with the cast.
Eve Daly was super as Annie, she acted well and had a lovely, powerful singing voice. All the children were great and performed their socks off, and they all had that “Ah” factor, particularly Kate Sowerby as Molly – what a voice. They say don’t perform with children and animals, so with Seamus as a well drilled Sandy and the great kids, the adults had to look to their laurels.
Jim Cowper looked good as Daddy Warbucks and his strong singing voice suited the role, while Lucy Beckford was an elegant and charming Grace, who had a good rapport with Annie. In Mike Beckford there was a sleazy Rooster, wheeling and dealing his way through the show, ably supported by Sarah Booth as a blousy and common Lily. I loved Laura Dollimore as the overpowering and slovenly Miss Hannigan. She was excellent, with strong vocals which very much suited the character.
This show has a big cast list and everyone worked hard right down to those in minor roles, particularly those who doubled up. The chorus sang well and added body to the production. The scene changes were smooth and Daddy Warbucks mansion looked great, well done Ann and Lawrence. Keep up the good work, Gateshead.
