‘And Then There Were None’ set on the remote Soldier Island off the coast of Devon is probably one of Agatha Christie’s better known ‘whodoneits’. For a very small performance area the set looked good and with such a large cast never looked crowded.
We first met Roger’s (Bob Baker) and Mrs Roger’s (Sue Baker) followed by Fred Norracott (Andy Ward) and one by one we were introduced to the other invited guests of Philip Lombard (Nathan Partington), Vera Claythorne (Laura Stothard), Anthony Marston (Arron Raw), William Blore (Mick McNeill), General John MacKenzie (Alan Perks), Emily Brent (Christine Beacock), Sir Lawrence Wargrave (Graham Wall) and Dr. Edward Armstrong. Why are they here ? A gramophone recording is played to the gathered guests and we learn they have all been complicit in the deaths of other people and are on the island to seal their fates. As in the nursery rhyme ‘Ten Little Soldier Boys’ one by one they are all bumped off one way or another relative to the rhyme.
This is a very wordy play but the audience were with it all the way. There were some twists and turns and a few red herrings along the way. This was a very good production and everyone played their parts extremely well with some strong performances. Congratulations must go to Steve Brundell on his excellent direction.
Thank you so much Broughton for yet another excellent evenings entertainment and I shall look forward with interest to your next production.
