This play is based around the 1990 World Cup semi final between England and Germany and for those of us who could remember what happened it brought back many memories.

Bill (Gavin Jones) and his wife Monica (Emma Knill) are watching the game on television in Spain where they are holidaying in the hope of rekindling their rocky marriage. They are joined by friend and ex colleague Ian (Jocelyn Cook) and his would be girl friend Birgitta (Sian Pearce) who just happens to be from Germany. The final member of the party is Dan (Nigel Morgan), a client of Bill's and as we later find out lover of Monica.

Gary Lineker features in Monica's imagination and he is the perfect man of her dreams.

This was an excellent cast, all very well suited to their roles. Their timing was slick and accents were excellent. They brought out the humour to the full and there were lots of amusing moments. A lot of attention had been given to their appearance on stage with good costumes and suntans, or lack of tan in Ian's case.

It was interesting to read about the set design and the reasons for the set being drawn so that focus was on the group of people watching the game.

A clever and amusing play, well directed and it even had a happy ending thanks of course to Gary Lineker.
