Longton Players had created a lovely atmosphere in the Village Hall for their evening of “One Act Plays”. Tables were laid cabaret style with nibbles and a complimentary glass of wine or fruit juice, so setting the scene for a relaxed and intimate evening. The first play “Score” by Lyndon Brooks, was a short scenario involving husband and wife playing a tennis mixed doubles match, no mean feat to replicate a game of tennis on stage, with imaginary tennis balls. Well done Lesley Southworth and Nick Briggs as Sheila and Harry. For the next offering we were introduced to “Noel Coward” in the guise of Dean Wallace. We were a little apprehensive at first, thinking this would be just a selection of Coward songs but as the evening progressed we were enthralled at the ensuing performance. Dean had put the material together himself. This incorporated Coward’s many well known songs but also added researched archive material from plays and films and he performed excerpts from these with appropriate dialogue. His “T.V.” interview was a fascinating aspect. His performance was a “tour de force” and the audience were intrigued, whether they were, or were not, “ Noel Coward” fans. Finally, as a complete contrast the “Mother Figure” play by Alan Ayckbourn brought us back to reality, with a delightfully played comedy. This was a three handed piece with great performances by Sarah Howden, Joan Miller and Mike Stockley. Good comic timing from all on stage. This play had an entirely appropriate set and props. All three directors Daniel Haresnape, Dean Wallace and Carole Quirk are to be congratulated on a fascinating evening’s entertainment. Well done to all involved This a company who are not afraid to try something a little different and they work very hard to ensure the audience have an interesting and thought provoking visit. Thank you for your warm welcome and kind hospitality.
